Journey – Cheyenne Bottoms & Geographic Center

  • 07/18/2017

A Wiley Prayer Journey and Adventure... This past winter, we were discussing where we wanted to visit on our next journey. At that time, the election was just around the corner. During the conversation we wondered where the Geographic Center of the United States was located. Upon searching the internet, we discovered there was a historical marker near Lebanon, Kansas for the geographic center of the contiguous United States. The center of the lower 48 states. This turned out to be about a 2 1/2 hour drive from Cheyenne Bottoms. Which is the largest wetland in the interior United States. Where...

Essential Oils for Animals

So happy that Spring has arrived...except it is only 35º here in Virginia today. According to the 15 day forecast temperatures should be in the 60's  and low 70's.  Yippee!!! Today I will discuss using Essential Oils for Animals. I started loving essential oils years ago when I purchased a blend of oils for migraines. The little vial had essential oils of Lavender, Peppermint, plus a carrier oil. At that time I didn't know what to do with it except to hold it under my nose. Years later I learned about diffusing essential oils which also helped tremendously. Since then I have...

Our Recommended Reading for 2017

REVISED I reworked the post since the images didn't show up in the eNewsletter. 2016 didn't fly by fast enough... but YAY!... New Years Day 2017 is FINALLY Here!!! 4 books worth reading: Highlighted; Jeff Olson's book; "The Slight Edge". Jeff is the founder of Nerium International, which offers age-defying skincare products through "relationship marketing".  I investigated Jeff's message and products, was convinced, and became a 2016 "brand partner" as a result of the outcomes achieved.  Since high school graduation, I've worked in more than one "relationship marketing" business,...

Christmas, Survival, and “The True Story of The Patton Prayer”

Christmas, Survival, and “The True Story of The Patton Prayer”

Some think the background story behind some of my illustrations adds to their meaningfulness, and such may be the case with “The True Story Of The Patton Prayer”. At a difficult point in my personal life I was commissioned by the Indiana National Guard’s 38th Infantry Division’s Chaplains Association to complete an illustration commemorating “Patton’s Prayer”.  I was SFC Wiley then; a platoon sergeant. Due to circumstances I had limited resources and had to carve out a work space in my mother’s unheated backyard tool house to produce the work through Christmas of 1996...

What is a Magi Quest?

An explaination... It was done to fulfill a request by my wife Dixie, who wanted me to do something Christmas-related. So, why not recreate a simple iconic Christmas scene - the Magi heading into Bethlehem - but with “twists” to evoke greater interest and avoid boring stereotypes. This led to producing “Magi Quest”.  After a little research “twists” were incorporated by placing the image title directly in the work to draw attention to what the event really was; an epic journey by the Wise Men, and by silhouetting them with the Milky Way - to give them and the Guiding...

Wiley Studio Window: The Quest For “Good Enough”

Wiley Studio strives for perfection - but never gets it. Such is the “quest” for creators of anything. There are no perfect cars, cameras, books, buildings, appliances - or, people. So, because Dixie and I are “just people” what we create will also necessarily be imperfect. But we accept the challenge - continue to strive for perfection - and will role out our imperfect works one by one. We see all the flaws - as you may - but keep going - and in that “going” we get better at what we do. It is said that “Practice Makes Perfect”, but what that may really mean is that...

Custer’s Resolve

Custer's Resolve Resolved to fight against a much larger cavalry force, Custer thwarted Stuart at Gettysburg on 3 July, 1863 with a magnificent plan - and stopped the Confederate Cavalry from penetrating the back of the Union Fishhook while Picket simultaneously charged from the front.  Lee's grand pincer strategy failed and Custer was part of the reason why. Custer and the Union Cavalry knew Stuart was coming, but what many don't realize is that Custer was outnumbered 10 to 1.  As was his custom, Custer had prepared by reconnoitering the battlefield well ahead of time - with a view to charging...

“Heart Connections” – Doc Wiley’s Illustrations

Viewers and clients have suggested that Doc's Wiley's illustrations have "heart connections" and cite an emphasis on history, research, image creativity, accuracy, and detail...and, maybe even the "elevation" of the lowly pencil. It's the strong "heart connection" thing that's the draw though. We like that, and think that plays into what makes Doc's images compelling and meaningful. To showcase this the following illustrations are provided with viewer / client comments:   DECATUR TRANSFER HOUSE Done for a family member as a gift for her sister who is from Decatur, Illinois... Comments: "That...

150th Gettysburg Reenactment Illustration This one took way too long to produce; only 40 hours production time but a myriad of things got in the way; work trips, daughter's marriage, son into U.S. Army, visiting grandchildren, photography trips, other illustrations, life in general, etc. The Gettysburg Series is being carried on throughout all other life pursuits.  Why?  Because it is about Gettysburg - the Civil War Battle that rivets mankind.  I have been focused on Gettysburg since small childhood.  That is why I became a Battlefield Illustrator-Reenactor for the 150th Gettysburg...
