100th Running of the Indy 500

100th Running of the Indy 500

WOW The 100th Running of the Indy 500; Sunday May 30, 2016! In 1911 the cars averaged roughly 75 miles an hour, 125 in 1951 my birth year, and now about 235!  Innovation in racing is an ongoing hallmark of Indy Cars, and every running of the 500 has had its drama.  But it all began with the 1911 Marmon Wasp... I've been to the race a half dozen times, enjoyed it from both infield and stands, and loved every aspect of it.  This year, however, work and ticket availability mean watching it on TV - but no matter; any way you can experience the Indy 500 is good! But, I have also enjoyed the Indy...

A Drawing That Inspires

"NoWhere To Hide" Have you ever glanced at artwork that snagged your attention and made you look more closely? Did it bring memories, inform, and make you feel a part of something bigger than yourself? Did it make you want to share it with others and create something meaningful yourself? Among the many definitions, to inspire means: “to spur on and to breath life into”.  It also refers to “the action necessary to move, motivate, empower, and expand the intellect or emotions”.  And, it means “to draw in then guide”. The illustration “NoWhere To Hide” is just such a work.   “NoWhere...

Denver – Best Pizza, Aloft Hotel, Family & More

Another Wiley Adventure We returned from a visit to meet our 7-week old granddaughter in Denver, Colorado.  The weather was perfect on a Friday when we landed; but we knew Denver was expecting a few inches of snow on Saturday.  Virginia was experiencing temperatures in the upper 60's...and still are Monday when I started this post. Yay!  BUT, I'm finishing this 3 weeks later due to both of us catching the flu, and then celebrating Christmas and New Years. Meeting Blake for the first time was super special for us...holding a precious life that will bring much joy to everyone she meets...is...

Coastal Centerpiece IV

As I am typing this post I look out the window and most of the leaves have fallen off the trees. Last night we experienced below freezing temperatures, but one of our Hibiscus plants on the back deck has 3 new blooms.  Of course, my Hubby tells me that I need to snap pics today...before their gone.  The sun shining so I'll wait until the blooms are bathed in sunshine! Now for the 4th Coastal Centerpiece. If you've seen my previous centerpieces then you see some common elements...coconut candles, flowers, black and white color theme, and shells.  The lantern is by Yankee Candle...the vase...

Coastal Triptych – Sand Dollars, Pelican Moon, & Happy Hibiscus

The Coastal Triptych is up! Scott finished the Hibiscus a little over a year ago.  Then he decided he wanted to draw 2 more coastal illustrations for a triptych.  The Sand Dollars he finished earlier this year.  And Pelican Moon was just recently competed.   I  love having a shelf under pictures...it just creates a complete look by allowing other coastal elements to sit on top. Tying everything together. Scott chose the bulkhead and lamps from Ikea...since we had the same combination in our guest bedroom. Happy Hibiscus   Here are a few coastal elements I pulled from other...

Pelican Moon Illustration

"Pelican Moon" is one of three in a Coastal Triptych done for my wonderful wife. There are seven American White Pelicans silhouetted against the moon or waves; majestic in flight or in familiar poses.  All may bring back fond memories of beach and coastal river experiences with these most interesting birds.  Technique was to draw outline of subjects, etch into the illustration board to produce more detail, then add prismacolor, gouache, oil pastel, and ink as needed. Enjoy All! Doc Time Of Execution:  40 Hours Technique / Media:  Mixed Media - Graphite, Prismacolor, Gouache, Oil Pastel,...

Weekend Escapes to the Chesapeake Bay Area

Weekend Escapes to the Chesapeake Bay Area

The Chesapeake Bay is the largest estuary in North America.  According to Wikipedia "An estuary is a partly enclosed coastal body of brackish water with one or more rivers or streams flowing into it, and with a free connection to the open sea."  The Bay lies between Virginia and Maryland with colonial towns, major cities, fishing villages and farms on both sides. This year we have enjoyed two weekend getaways to the Chesapeake Bay area on Maryland's eastern shore.  Both trips we found our favorite town was St. Michaels...located on the Miles River with restaurants on the harbor.  This small...

Gettysburg Inspirations

GETTYSBURG   A Childhood Fascination - and now another Family Trip...nothing uncommon to some maybe...but a Great Time nonetheless. Preceding the family visit was a detailed guided tour of the Battlefield - then followed by son Ryan's Visit - where he said I had my "Full Geek On" as I reiterated  what happened. He got a new grasp of the vast extent of the Gettysburg Battle on all three days - and was struck by what both sides had done. Gettysburg - to us - is the Signature Battle of the Central War of American History. Our thought is that Everyone should go there, think, and absorb. Each...

These coastal illustrations will be hanging in our living room. "Sand Dollars" In Explanation: The "Sand Dollars" are three "dollars in the sand"; a natural sand dollar flanked by two 1921 Morgan Silver Dollars; showing the front and back sides of what some hold to be the most...

Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge Trip

We recently made a trip to the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge; though a few months later then planned. We were set to visit the refuge in February...when the migratory birds stop by on their way north. However, it snowed several inches in Virginia and Maryland so the trip was postponed. Nevertheless, Eagles, Osprey, Cranes, Ducks, Turtles abounded, and our favorite...Blue Herons. And a special treat: the over-sized Delmarva Peninsula Fox Squirrel...on the endangered species list. This was our first serious time out with Olympus E-M5 Mark IIs and various lenses...a time of gear shake down...

Faux Mercury Glass

Just got home from an early morning picnic and photo shoot of Eagles, Osprey, and Blue Heron! We will be posting pics of them later. We love animal adventures! We witnessed a couple of Ospreys "dive bomb" an Eagle that landed in the Accotink Bay where they were fishing. The Ospreys would dive at the Eagle and then the Eagle would jump into the air and raise it's talons at the Osprey. Back to the reason for this post. For now I wanted to shoot and post my new Faux Mercury Glass bottles and Mason jars.  I have read several tutorials and decided I wanted to spray the bottles black first. I started...

We have moved some plants back out on our deck...hoping we're not too early...but sure the plants are happy. I'm late with my Coastal Centerpiece III; but it finally came together. We've been changing out some camera equipment; so I've been learning my new camera and the Olympus menus. Also waiting on Adobe to recognize the RAW files from the new Olympus OM-D E-M5...

Lobster Corn Chowder

We LOVE Soup, Stews, and Chowders! I can eat them all year around! How about you? I just love how the flavors meld together...and they typically use one pot! My sons and I first discovered Corn Chowder at the "Feast of the Hunter's Moon" in Indiana several years ago when we found a booth serving it. I was totally surprised that the boys liked it...Doc likes it too! So the search began for a recipe...I still continue to make it several times a year.  You may be able to find a couple of Mason Jars full of Cheddar Corn Chowder in our freezer. It's so easy to pull out a jar and send it to work...
